Dizziness and vertigo are two different things

Vertigo and dizziness

Dizziness and vertigo are often confused with one another, but they are two very different things.

Dizziness is a general term used to describe a wide range of sensations, including lightheadedness, unsteadiness, and feeling faint.

Vertigo, on the other hand, is a type of dizziness that is characterized by the sensation of spinning or moving even when you are standing still.

There are many different causes of dizziness and vertigo, ranging from simple things like dehydration or low blood sugar to more serious conditions like inner ear infections or stroke.

However, one of the most common causes of both dizziness and vertigo is a problem with the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance and equilibration.

There are several different types of vestibular disorders that can lead to dizziness and vertigo.

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common, and it is caused by tiny calcium crystals that become dislodged in the inner ear and disrupt the normal flow of fluid. This can cause the sensation of spinning or moving even when you are stationary.
  • Labyrinthitis is another type of vestibular disorder that can cause dizziness and vertigo. This condition is usually caused by a viral infection that affects the inner ear and can lead to inflammation and damage to the delicate structures inside. This can cause symptoms like dizziness, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting.

If you are experiencing dizziness or vertigo, it is important to see your doctor to rule out any serious underlying causes. However, there are also many simple things that you can do to help relieve your symptoms. Drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding sudden movements, and getting plenty of rest can all help to ease dizziness and vertigo.
